What makes CSU different from CDU

At federal elections CDU and CSU present a joint manifesto and parliamentary group. The CSU, however, contests only Bavaria and explicitly presents itself as Bavaria's voice in Berlin. Its additional 2025 Bavaria agenda highlighted limiting migration, strengthening the economy and Bundeswehr, and protecting Bavarian interests.[41]

Its policy family is therefore essentially the CDU/CSU programme above, but with more pronounced regional federalism and often a more conservative tone on migration, internal security and social/cultural questions.

Following, strongholds & government footprint

Its entire electoral base is Bavaria. bpb identifies especially strong areas in Old Bavaria, Swabia and Catholic parts of Franconia. The CSU has governed Bavaria continuously since 1957; Markus Söder is party chair and Bavarian Minister-President.[9]

Today: federal governing partner alongside CDU and SPD, while also controlling the Bavarian state government.
